Pokémon Creations Q&A

What is Pokémon Creations?

Pokémon Creations is a growing YouTube series, giving artists the opportunity to create fan-made Pokémon designs from other topics and test their creativity.

What series are there so far?

At the moment, here are the available series:

Pokésaur: Dinosaurs and pre-Cenozoic birds,

Pokémonsters: Extinct amphibians, reptiles (excluding dinosaurs), fish, invertebrates, and Synapsids (Mammal-Like Reptiles). Unclassified animals such as Tullymonstrum can also be in this series,

Pokébeasts: Extinct Mammals and Birds,

Pokébotany: Extinct plants and Fungi,

Pokéstoric: All of the above.

What is the difference between a Mini episode and a Main episode?

A Main episode will have chosen entries submitted by the audience. Artists are then able to choose from the options available, so please give as many options as you can so they don't feel restricted. There will be five segments per video, each having an artist, the subject, and a certain line of Pokémon.

A Mini episode is more relaxed, the artist choosing what subject/reference they like, with the exception of what has already been featured in the series. There is only one segment in a Mini video.

What is the process?

  • The process is as follows, although is flexible:

  • The artist first agrees to the agreement document (If I sent it to them).

  • Depending on the type of episode, artists choose the subject they would like to design a Pokémon from, first come first serve. Please do this before starting any work so we don't end up conflciting on any taken entries.

  • I then research those options. Artists can either wait for me to finish my research for reference or commence their own research. They can even start designing from whatever you find for reference, although I do recommend either of the former to solidify the design.

  • This isn't mandatory, but it helps if artists send me stages of your design process, so I can give pointers. These are only recommendations and do not have to be followed. However, I will inform any changes if the design(s) goes against the terms.

  • When you have finished the design, the artists can send them to me on any platform, although email is the most preferable as it retains the quality of the image.

  • It is up to choice, but the details of the Pokémon are decided. Here are the following details that will be shown:

    • Name,

    • Type(s),

    • Height,

    • Weight,

    • Egg Group(s),

    • Ability/Abilities,

    • Possible moves,

    • Stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed),

  • I then work on the video, informing the artist(s) of every major stage throughout video production.

  • I then upload a draft video, which I send to the artist, some friends, and people who have their work featured in the video, as an Unlisted Video. It would be helpful to give any feedback.

  • I then apply any changes needed and then upload the video.

What designs do you expect?

Here are the things I do expect:

  • No NSFW, gore, racism, or certain culturally offensive content,

  • Highlights and tones.

  • Should be recognizable as a Pokémon design. This does not mean style.

  • Should be based on the subject for the video, e.g. a Koolosuchus Pokémon would be for a Pokémonsters video.

  • Transparent images are preferable as they make animating more flexible, but backgrounds are fine. If you are unable to make your image transparent, consider making the background a contrasting color to your design and its elements; having bold black outlines and a bright background helps too.

  • I accept both digital art and traditional art. With traditional art, please make sure the image is in focus, is under consistent lighting, and is taken as a decent - preferably high - quality image.

  • It doesn't have to be a fossil Pokémon or a Rock-type. I want to have participating artists feel almost unrestricted.

  • Any theft, trace overs, or copying, will result in your design, and even your space, to be fully rejected.

Do you own the design?

  • The design you have made is yours and you are free to use it for whatever you wish. I will only reuse your artwork if associated with the Pokémon Creations series.

Who can take part?

  • Due to keeping a certain quality to the videos, I cannot simply accept anyone. However, this isn't due to popularity but skill and potential. Of course, these expectations are not very high, as I have previously stated. If I refuse to let you be part of the series, please do not be discouraged as I do offer opportunities for those less-skilled or experienced in competitions, one of which is the recently created Randomon; please look at this page for more details.

  • It will help if you show me examples of your work or a website of your portfolio. But DO NOT STEAL ANYONE'S ARTWORK OR CLAIM IT AS YOUR OWN.

  • If I have contacted you, then that means that I believe you have the skills for the series.

  • At the moment, I will take people who are 14 or over, although please be aware that you will be exposing yourself online.

How many subjects can we choose?

  • Artists can only choose 1 subject for their slot in the video, but you can use any other references and subjects for evolutions or details in the design. For example, if you want to want to make a Pokémnon design from a Triceratops, a Protoceratops, and a Chasmosaurus, only one of those dinosaurs can be the entry for the series, and either the base stage or the final stage will be the main focus (not Megas or GMax forms). If there are multiple branches, I highly suggest either making the base the main focus or having all evolutions relate to the subject in its design.

  • If you are using other Pokémon in your design, that is fine. However, I highly suggest having a good reason for that Pokémon to be used in your design to solidify the concept. Your design should also be the main focus. If you want to use a Fakémon, please ask the original artist who made that Pokémon for their permission before using their design. And please be sure that you draw this from scratch and isn't an altered or traced version of the original image. As I have said, any theft will result in your design being fully rejected, so the use of someone else's design in any way will need their permission.

I don't know much about extinct fauna/flora or Pokémon.

That is fine, I am happy to help in almost any way. I have a playlist that you can view here to for a variety of videos that can help with artistic design and Pokémon knowledge. For prehistoric animals/plants/fungi, I can provide information and resources, either to help with your decision or for research. And I am happy to answer any queries you have or offer advice.

Is there a deadline?

For the main series, I suggest doing your design as soon as you can so as to prevent the video from being delayed. So please consider that before joining.

For the mini-series, there is no deadline.

What if I change my mind and want to leave?

With this, I do understand, that things can crop up that you will need to prioritize over the video. So it is fine if you do leave. Although I will give your slot for that video to someone else, you can keep the animal you have chosen, although only for 3 months, after that your subject will be available for future artists. This is the same if you are still on board and I have not heard from you in the same amount of time, but I will check up on you before taking any action. If you do not reply within a month, I will carry out removing your place and making the chosen subject available.

However, there will always be a spot available for you in the future after this.

Payment?

Although I cannot pay for any commissions at this time, I do plan to in the future for anyone who takes them. Artists have the right to refuse, but it would be appreciated if you heard out my idea in case you may be interested, but can still refuse afterward.

In the future, will monetize my videos, although I will ask participating artists if they are okay with this.

Fan-Made Mechanics

Yes, I am happy to introduce fan-made mechanics in the series. But they will have to be somewhat reasonable such as how powerful it would make the Pokémon or how it would be in the competitive scene.

If the artist who introduces the mechanic allows it, other artists can use that mechanic for the series. But please do not claim the idea as your own.

Patreon

With Patreon, Patrons can choose an animal to be made in the series and can choose an artist that I commission, other than themselves to take part, although I can reject their choice if the artist violates any terms.

Each Patron can have one Mini episode of their own that either they can illustrate or have either I or a commissioned artist illustrate. But they will also have to follow the terms.
